2 common video production misconceptions debunked

Nearly every time I meet someone new and tell them what I do for a living, I get a similar response, “That seems really interesting. I would hire your company to do work for me, but I don’t have a use for video in my business.

I understand why most people think this way. It all has to do with a few common misconceptions.

Many people have told me they believe video production is just for broadcasting. If they don’t have a need to advertise on television or cable then they have no need for video production services.

The other thing I often hear is that video production is expensive. People have told me there is NO WAY they could possibly afford a “film crew” to come out to their business and set up a huge production just so they can post a video online.

Often times this leads to the DIY method. Don’t get me wrong, there are many times shooting your video yourself is a good move and allows you to connect with your audience and help promote your business. However, there are times that you want a professional look for the content that you are putting out to the public and those times are crucial to helping you establish your brand. The last thing that you want is to give the misconception that you are working out of your garage (even if you are) and are not a professional in your field. For that reason, I am going to talk briefly about the value of video production for your business and debunk some of the common misconceptions that I addressed earlier in this blog post.

MYTH: Video production is just for broadcasting

DEBUNKED: The web has provided an outlet for many businesses to create content and promote to consumers. I could go into a bunch of statistics, but I will instead leave you with this link to WordStream’s listicle: 37 Staggering Video Marketing Statistics for 2017. WordStream does a great job sharing reasons why businesses should be expanding into using video. Even if you thought that video was for other business but not yours you will see in this article that your competition is using video and if you want to remain competitive and appeal to your customers you should consider using video too.

MYTH: Video is expensive

DEBUNKED: There is a common misconception that every video shoot is a major “Hollywood production.” Maybe 15 to 20 years ago I would probably agree that a professional video production shoot looks like something you would see on a backlot studio tour in California. But today, thanks to improvements in technology, it is possible to have a professional video produced with a lot less equipment, crew and cost. The result is a more affordable, but still high-quality, product.
